Ted Reese - Founder’s Story
I have a 61-foot Viking boat and my wife and I cruise our boat. We use it extensively and sleep on the boat.
What I realized is that, when I would wake up in the morning, I would have itchy eyes and I would be stuffed up.
We ran our air-conditioner at low temperatures, but something was going on in the boat and so I decided to get a portable dehumidifier and placed it outside the master stateroom. I turned the dehumidifier on, I was amazed, after about five hours, how much water was in that container.
I continued to run the dehumidifier for a couple of years, but there was a problem. It was not convenient that every time we would leave the harbor.
We would need to manage the portable dehumidifier, empty the bucket, and move it to a closet. Inevitably, moving it to the closet, water would spill on me from the coils and onto the carpet. When we would come back into the harbor, we would need to take it out of the closet and reconnect it.
It did help the itchy eyes and the stuffiness in the morning.
I decided that, with my size boat, there's got to be a way to install a similar system that would be more effective and out-of-the-way. That's when RiteAire Marine was created. The key individual is Hector Escardo, who did a lot of work on my boat. He’s an expert yacht carpenter, if you will, a shipwright. Hector could build cabinets and fix and replace a wide variety of items.
Together, we came up with a dehumidifier system. We knew:
- Specs Had To Be Compact
- A Unit Ended Up Being 12 Inches Wide, 12 Inches High, & 22 Inches Long
- It Plugged Into Regular 110 Current
- Draw Low Amperage - 4 Amps.
- Had To Have Multiple Coils
- Boat’s Moist Air Passing By The Coils Would Drop Out A Lot Of Water.
- It Would Take Out About 75 Pounds Of Water A Day. That's A Lot Of Water.
- These Were Many Of Important Design Specs.
Having a unit installed out-of-the-way enabled us to run ductwork to multiple staterooms, which we found was important.
Not only did we want to remove the moisture from the master stateroom, but we wanted to control the moisture totally inside the boat.
From research literature, we learned that it was important to get the moisture under 50%.
Airconditioning cannot reduce the humidity below 50%.
We learned that when moisture is over 50%, it holds items like dust mites, mold spores, and we learned that it holds chemicals like formaldehyde.
Now that we have that solution in place, we no longer have these problems.
Now, when I wake up in the morning, I don't have itchy eyes, I don't have stuffiness.
I feel healthy and we know that we're maintaining a healthy environment within the entire yacht.

How We Eliminated Mold and Mildew on Our Viking 76 and 80

2020 Horizon 102
I’ve appreciated the quality of the air. It’s been remarkably different. I’ve had boats before where the humidity was so high you had Command hooks on the wall and they would fall off and ceiling panels fall down. I also feel like my throat isn’t as dry in the morning. The owner is very happy with the quality of the air.
They were concerned. Because of the wetness, musty odor and diesel smell they could not sleep comfortably in their cabin and had to sleep elsewhere on the yacht. (The diesel fuel tank is located below their cabin) Additionally, the wife said every time they would return from a trip their cloths smelled like diesel.
The owners installed a RiteAire Marine™ Dehumidifying System in their yacht in December of 2013 and are ecstatic with the results! The wetness, musty smell and diesel odors are gone. The owners can sleep comfortably in their cabin and their clothes no longer smell of diesel.
Pat, the Seahawk’s Captain says, “Every boat has a distinctive smell … they ALL smell of fumes and heavy musty wetness. Add a RiteAire Marine™ Dehumidifier and the smell, musty odor and wetness goes away almost immediately.”
Captain Pat, “Before we installed a RiteAire Marine™ Dehumidifier in the Seahawk, we ran our air conditioners constantly, even then, when you would touch hard surfaces in the yacht like the granite counter tops they felt WET.
After installing the RiteAire Marine™, everything is dry to the touch.
RiteAire Marine™ allows us to keep the yacht at 70ºF with 45% humidity. Perfect!
Before RiteAire Marine™, we had to constantly clean the carpets with heavy duty machines to get rid of the moisture and musty smell. We had to stay ahead of it, or the wetness and musty odor would get really bad. With RiteAire Marine™, this is no longer necessary.
In addition to solving the wetness and odor problem, the RiteAire Marine™ will save my owners a lot of time and money and keep their yacht in better condition.”
According to Captain Pat, “You could blindfold me and take me onboard a dozen yachts. If only one had a RiteAire Marine™ system installed and running, I could pick it out right away.”

Spencer 69 Shockwave
Orange Beach, Alabama
Hector Escardo equipped my last boat, the 70’ Viking Quicktime, which we fished competitively out of Orange Beach, Alabama, with a RiteAire Marine™ Dehumidifier System at the same time he installed tuna tubes on board. Quicktime had two RAM units; one under the berth in the master stateroom, and the other in the brow forward of the salon. We have a lot of humidity in Orange Beach in the summer. The RAM system lowered the relative humidity onboard to 48 percent. The Viking had a freezer that used to sweat and grow mold. After RAM was installed, there was absolutely no mold, and it was easy to keep clean. The boat smelled better, and we didn’t have to run the air conditioning as hard.
Quicktime had a cold-water chiller system, and one of the chillers failed during tournament season. We went out fishing anyway – we didn’t have time to slow down. During the day, it got up to 80 degrees inside the boat. It actually felt comfortable in there because it wasn’t humid thanks to RiteAire!
I recommended the RiteAire Marine Dehumidifier system to the owner of my new sportfish, Shockwave, a Spencer 69. I am looking forward to having better air quality onboard this summer due to the RAM system.
More Success Stories to Come!

The owners of the Seahawk have been highly sensitized to odors since they found mold in their private residence. They had to have their home rebuilt because of the mold and odor problem. They could smell some of the same odors on their yacht in addition to the smell of diesel.

Princess Lily loves RiteAire Marine™!
I captain a 66 foot enclosed bridge Viking called the Princess Lily. The yacht, built in 2014, is beautiful inside and out and a big part of my job is to keep it that way.
Express Project Manager
A short while ago I was working on a project for one of our customers. They had recently purchased an 88’ yacht, had taken it out for a cruise then came to me with an issue all too familiar to anyone who has been around big yachts.
She said her stateroom had felt a bit damp. She is a sensitive woman and would like her personal environment to be a bit lower in humidity.
Hector, a corporate representative from RiteAire Marine™ shows up at my door with a little brochure talking about a product that could improve this particular situation, a RiteAire Marine™ dehumidification system. He said it installs clean and fast, runs almost silently, and would get rid of the moisture and odor in 30 min or less and would keep it that way, automatically.
RiteAire Marine™ Dehumidification System dropped the humidity from the high 50’s right down to our target 45% level in a safe and reasonable time. I’ve been around yachts for a long time and frankly, even I was impressed.
Many yacht owners think air conditioners can solve the humidity issue. But opening and closing doors, windows and hatches, just during normal activity, can over tax many AC systems. In the southern climates, the AC runs nearly all the time leading to more condensation and odor.
To do the job right on big yachts, you need one system to cool the air and another, like the RiteAire Marine™ Dehumidification System to remove the moisture.
Shortly after the RiteAire Marine™ System was installed, the REAL test came. The owner returned to the yacht opened her stateroom door and simply could not believe the difference. The humidity was reduced and a perfect temperature and humidity balance was achieved, automatically.
A satisfied customer … I like that!
I feel fortunate to have found RiteAire Marine™ just in time for this job and feel certain that RiteAire Marine™ is going to help me create many more happy customers for Cheoy Lee in the future.
Captain Abner Pires
“Before installing a RiteAire Marine™ Dehumidifier we kept 4 air conditioners running pretty much
full time. Still the yacht had a moldy, musty smell. We’ve been using RiteAire Marine™ for 4 months and now operate only 2 air conditioners. The moldy, musty smell is gone!”
- Captain Abner Pires, 57’ Tollycraft Motor Yacht
I recently purchased a Baia 84 yacht. unused for many years. The interior reeked of mold and mildew. It not only smelled bad, but the atmosphere inside the yacht was unhealthy. I knew the rebuilding process was going to be expensive. I was resolved to find a way to protect my health AND my investment going forward.
I had the RiteAire Marine™ Dehumidifier installed while my yacht was in drydock undergoing a complete interior makeover.
While undertaking a project of this magnitude, I worked with numerousmarine “system specialists, such as plumbers, electricians, carpenters, mechanics, engineers, and designers. With all of them, there were issues and complications and yes, even cost overruns. This was NOT the case with RiteAire Marine™.
They came and installed the system quickly and perfectly. No one did a better or more professional job installing equipment on my yacht than RiteAire Marine™. I am very, very pleased.
My Baia 84 has been in the water a little more than a month, inside and out, it is better than new. And I can rest easy knowing that my RiteAire Marine™ Dehumidifier is going to help keep it that way, 24/7 automatically. No smells of any kind, no moisture just the perfect healthy balance between temperature and humidity.
I am very, very pleased with RiteAire Marine™ and would recommend this outstanding system to any yacht owner wishing to protect his health and his yacht from mold and moisture.
Thanks RiteAire Marine™ for a job well done!
